January - BPO Seminar on Onshore Energy Supply

To meet sea region market’s demands halfway Baltic Ports Organization (BPO) organized the BPO Seminar on Onshore Energy Supply that was held in Tallinn on 14th January 2009 and gathered about 35 participants including ports representatives, international organizations, shipping lines, global leaders in supplying innovative power supply solutions, research institutions and more.

The official opening of the BPO Seminar was made by a host Ain Kaljurand, Chairman of the Management Board in Port of Tallinn who welcomed all the quests.
Discussion during the meeting mostly based on pro-climate and onshore power supply activities.  H. Ranner, ESPO Policy Advisor pointed out that global warming has become a societal priority which ports can not afford to ignore. That is why ports should promote CO2 reduction measures for terminal operations and improve the energy efficiency of buildings, cargo handling and transportation. As a major part of the BPO Seminar was dedicated to working on climate issues in ports the conclusions were that ports obligatory should be environment friendly by taking responsibility for the environmental impact on ports’ activities. Mentioned during the seminar energy savings programmes, activities to increase the use of alternative power sources in ports’ operations or low carbon fuels are good ideas to make the climate better.
Not to miss were also the presence of companies in supplying innovative power supply solutions that presented their own solutions and ideas for cleaner and unpolluted ports.

The host of the Seminar was Port of Tallinn who kindly partnered the event. The Seminar was also sponsored by Siemens AG.

The BPO Seminar on Onshore Energy Supply 2009 was highly evaluated by participants both organizational and essentially that is why the second edition of the event is highly more than likely to be held next year in January.
