April - BPO Seminar on EU Sea Strategy - how does it strengthen the region development.

Baltic Sea Region representatives debated on how to make the Baltic Sea Region accessible and attractive.


BPO Seminar was held on 1st April 2009 in European Parliament buildings. After coffee and refreshments the meeting was opened both by Mr. Julian Skelnik, BPO Chairman and Mrs. Anne E. Jensen, Member of the European Parliament and Member of the Transport and Tourism Committee of the EP.

Invited Swedish Permanent Representation to EU,  Mrs. Sofia Johansson, focused on several significant points that need to be taking into account while implementation of the strategy, carried out by Swedish Presidency this time. Johansson presented macro regional approach to the strategy. She also counted challenges and opportunities which all supposed to make the Baltic Sea Region environmentally sustainable, prosperous, accessible and attractive and fist of all safe and secure.

Just after the lively discussion resulting from described ideas of Swedisih Presidency, Prof. Karl-Heinz Breitzmann from The Baltic Institute of Marketing, Transport and Tourism at the University of Rostock, presented highly attractive statistics concerning the development of the Baltic Sea Region and the role of maritime transport and ports.

Last but not least, the presentation describing new port in Russia – Ust-Luga Port was given. Mr. Maxim Shirokov, General Director, presented port’s basic data, challenges and opportunities, as well as port’s development projects.

All presented speeches comes with the great interest and ended up with  a constructive debate.
 
From this place BPO would like to thank Mrs. Anne E. Jensen for the support in organizing the Seminar. Without Mrs. Jensen's help the meeting could not take place.
 
The third edition of the BPO Seminar gathered more than expected cause 25 representatives mainly from Baltic Sea Region, organizations, regional offices in Brussels and Members of the European Parliament. That explicitly proves the need to organize more seminars concerning similar and topical subjects. Please follow the news regarding next BPO events and book the dates in your 2009 and 2010 calendar.
