HELCOM agrees on a common approach for the implementation of SDGs

High-level representatives of the Baltic Sea countries and the European Union agreed upon a common approach regarding reaching the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Baltic Sea region. The decision has been made on February 28th, during the 38th HELCOM meeting, currently under way in Helsinki, Finland.

The HELCOM platform will be the instrument of choice for coordination of the regional implementation of ocean-related SDGs in the Baltic Sea. Delegates expressed their commitment to the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan, a key step on the road to achieving the stipulations of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The renewal of the Baltic Sea Action plan was widely supported, promising the incorporation of a long term perspective and a coordinated effort to address identified gaps and emerging issues.

A cut in emissions from Baltic shipping, achieved by the establishment of SECA and NECA in the Baltic Sea region, as well as the introduction of special area restrictions for the discharge of sewage from passenger ships are important steps towards achieving the SDGs.

Through the implementation of said regulations, maritime transport contributes directly towards the fulfillment of SDG no. 14, i.e. the conservation and sustainable usage of oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development, as well as various other SDGs.

Bogdan Ołdakowski, BPO Secretary General, said:
“We recognize the important role of HELCOM when it comes to reaching the goals of UN sustainable development in the Baltic Sea region. Higher demands related to emissions from maritime transport in the Baltic region have a substantial contribution to meeting some of the UN sustainable development goals. The BPO is glad that we can be a part of this process”.

The Baltic Ports Organization stresses the need for the development of port infrastructure and fleet overhauls necessary for meeting these goals and points out the costs related to these projects. The BPO is active in coordinating the efforts of various stakeholders leading to the ultimate objective – a cleaner and sustainable Baltic region.

The BPO retains its status as an observer at HELCOM and is an active member of the HELCOM Maritime Working Group.
